A decision to write-off electricity debts of up to 1,000 euros is costing the Public Power Corporation (PPC) close to half a billion euros.
The ruling party SYRIZA and the former Minister of Energy Panos Skourletis have issued an informal order to PPC not to cut power to consumers which owed less than 1,000 euros in unpaid electricity bills. This policy continued under the new Minister Giorgos Stathakis and led to the accumulation of unpaid PPC bills totaling some 470 million euros. Currently there are over 1.5 million debtors with less than 1,000 euros in unpaid bills.
