One of the eleven priority measures presented by the new Romanian Government is a program for increasing the utilization of hydropower potential. Its is expected that hydro sector will ensure the increase in the share of electricity produced from renewable energy sources (RES), including hydropower plants with capacity over 10 MW, up to 43 % by 2020.
For the period 2017-2035, hydropower sector should participate in the national power system with an installed capacity of about 6,500 MW. According to the strategy presented by the new Government, the potential for electricity generation in hydropower sector, primarily of Hidroelectrica, the largest electricity producer in the country, should reach 59 % in 2020 and 67 % by 2035.
