Non-governmental environmental organizations Green Istria and Green Action invite the public to sign a petition which requests from Croatian Prime Minister Tihomir Oreskovic and the Government to abandon the environmentally harmful and economically unprofitable project for the construction of coal-fired thermal power plant Plomin C. The petition can be signed until 30 June.
The petition draws attention to many reasons why the Government should abandon the project, Among other things, it is estimated that TPP Plomin C would cause up to 1,000 cases of premature deaths during its operational life of 40 years, also adversely affecting the Croatian carbon-dioxide emissions. It is also likely that the construction of this coal-fired power plant would create the need for large quantities of imported coal. Lastly, the price of electricity produced by the plant, would be at least twice as high as the current market price.
