Turkish Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Berat Albayrak confirmed that the power outages in the Istanbul area that occurred at the end of 2016 were linked to physical sabotage on the grid and acknowledged that electricity grid also faced a significant cyber attack. He also confirmed that the security of energy supply does not face any substantial risks.
Minister Albayrak said that security on the electricity grid was stepped up upon increasing tip-offs regarding the potential attacks in recent days and stated that the latest instance of such attacks was US-based on Thursday. Regarding previous sabotage, he noted that some suspects were detained in connection with the attacks on power lines. The electricity grid was sabotaged in three different locations in Istanbul and the sabotage involved cutting off cables and other actions. He confirmed that seven main power lines were cut off simultaneously from the grid, leaving a serious damage on the system, adding that four out of seven damaged lines are already restored to the grid.
