An agreement, which will enable reverse natural gas flow from Bulgaria to Greece, is expected to be realized in the fourth quarter of this year. The agreement was supposed to be signed in May, but it was delayed. According to sources, the delay was caused by the Bulgarian side due to its business relations with Russian supplier Gazprom which has booked the entire capacity of the pipeline connecting the two countries.
The use of bi-directional gas flows was made possible due to the implementation of the EU capacity allocation mechanism (CAM) network code on 1 November 2015. This makes cross-border bundled capacity available between the two countries. Currently, Russian natural gas enters Greece via Bulgaria through the single direction pipeline.
