Ukrainian state-owned energy company Naftogaz announced that it is ready to join trilateral negotiations on gas related issues which will be held on 9 December in Brussels.
About a third of natural gas consumed in the European Union originates from Russia, and half of that gas is transited through Ukraine, but since the cooperation between Ukraine and Russia in the gas sector was interrupted in 2015, the possibility of a dispute between the two countries regarding gas prices or other issues has significantly increased. Ukrainian Naftogaz said earlier that the company is prepared to resume gas purchases from Russian Gazprom. This statement came briefly after Russian Minister of Energy Alexander Novak and European Commission Vice-President for Energy Union Maros Sefcovic met for talks in late November in Moscow, where the two officials agreed that the representatives of the EU, Russia and Ukraine should set up the meeting next month to discuss the gas supply of Russian natural gas to Ukraine.
